There is no additional designation from the German Medical Association for ship's doctors. This also means that there is no official training programme, degree course or similar for ship's doctors. Below, we explain why it is nevertheless advisable to attend a ship's doctor course before working as a ship's doctor.

The specifications and requirements of cruise lines for prospective ship's doctors vary. The qualifications required vary significantly depending on the shipping company, area of operation, and whether it is a river or ocean cruise. On our ship's doctor courses, the requirements are presented by our lecturers (ship's doctors) or by representatives of the shipping companies. In addition, you will be thoroughly prepared for working as a ship's doctor on board through a variety of interesting lectures.

Several steps are required to become a ship's doctor.

Medizinstudium:

First, you must complete a medical degree. In Germany, this usually takes six years and concludes with a state examination.

Approbation:

After successfully completing your studies, you must apply for a licence to practise medicine in order to be allowed to practise in Germany.

Specialist medical training:

It is advantageous to complete specialist medical training, e.g. in general medicine or another relevant field (e.g. emergency medicine, tropical medicine). This can help you acquire the knowledge and skills necessary for working on a ship.

Additional qualifications:

Some shipping companies require special training or certificates, such as a course in emergency medical care or survival at sea (STCW certificate).

Gaining experience:

Practical experience in the medical field is important. Many ship's doctors have previously worked in hospitals or clinics.
